About Juan Pimentel

Juan Pimentel Ramírez was a Mexican guitar maker associated with a longstanding workshop in Mexico City. His guitar-making career reportedly began in the 1940s, and his instruments became known among classical and Latin guitarists for their traditional construction and craftsmanship.

Historical accounts associate Pimentel guitars with prominent musicians including Gilberto Puente, of the celebrated Mexican guitar trio Los Tres Ases, and guitarist Saulo Sedano. Andrés Segovia's name has also appeared in accounts of Pimentel's clientele, although that association has not been independently verified.

Juan Pimentel was an independent Mexican luthier and should not be confused with Lorenzo Pimentel or the Pimentel guitar-making family of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

About This Guitar

Built in 1997, this instrument bears Juan Pimentel's original workshop label identifying Mexico City, Mexico.

The guitar features a finely grained spruce top with a decorative mosaic rosette and striking, bookmatched rosewood back and sides. The wood has attractive warm brown coloration and darker figuring. The exact rosewood species has not been confirmed, although Palo Escrito (Mexican rosewood) is a possibility.

This particular instrument was custom-built for its original owner, whose name, "Mitchell," is inlaid into the headstock. This personalized detail distinguishes it from standard examples and reflects its custom-order origins.

Condition

The guitar is in excellent overall condition, with minor cosmetic finish wear consistent with age and careful use. There is a small ding near the soundhole and some lacquer wear on the shoulder. Please examine the photographs for details.

Included is a KNA passive, removable, no-modification pickup system with a 1/8" output jack. The pickup can be removed without permanently altering the instrument.

The original hardshell case is also included.
